Correspondence and miscellany concerning destruction of weapons used at Kent State, May 4, 1970, 1971-1986.

Following events on the Kent State University campus on May 4, 1970, the Ohio Adjutant General began activities to investigate the actions of the Ohio National Guard and student protestors. Subsequently, the Adjutant General sought permission from the United States District Court for Northern Ohio to dispose of weapons used by National Guard members on the Kent State University campus to update the National Guard's armory. Attorneys for the plaintiffs (students who were wounded and families of deceased students) opposed the Adjutant General's actions. Judge Thomas of the District Court offered a compromise that both the Adjutant General and the plaintiffs' attorneys accepted. A rifle and a pistol were to be given to Yale University Archives (the repository for plaintiffs' case files). A rifle also was to be given to the Ohio Historical Society (repository for Ohio Attorney General, representing the State of Ohio, Ohio Adjutant General, and Ohio Highway Patrol records pertaining to Kent State incident). Records consist of correspondence, briefs, motions, court orders, notes, exhibits, and news clippings.
